I just heard about this story on the radio tonight. Please click on the link and read the article, then make a comment in the "comments" section above.
Often when we talk about modern examples of racism (and hate crimes) I think we like to pretend that it happens in the United States or somewhere ELSE. This is just one more example of how extreme prejudice can lead to violent acts.... in Canada... in the year 2010. http://www.cbc.ca/canada/nova-scotia/story/2010/02/22/ns-cross-burning-hants-county.html Watch the brief clip below from the 1962 film version of To Kill a Mockingbird. This version is considered iconic and one of the best book adaptations of all time. Part of the reason for this is the excellent casting. Gregory Peck (who plays Atticus) won an Oscar for his role. Many people who have seen this movie can't imagine any other actors playing the roles. If someone were to make a modern version of Mockingbird, who would you like to see play the main characters? Hollywood actors famously known, or unknown talents? Would it be live action, or animated? Give reasons for your choices in the "comments" section. Some people requested a map of Maycomb County to help them visualize what is going on in the story. What a great idea! This is often given out as a project to students and I'm sure you can all find many examples online, but here is one that I thought was particularly good.
If you click on the link you can see a version that you can zoom in on. http://www.enotes.com/images/enotes/9061/large.jpg Enjoy! Please click on the document below to get a detailed schedule of when you need to have chapters read. If you have any questions please ask me.
Please read the attached newspaper articles and respond to the question in the "comments" section (green link below the "Tuesday Night Homework" label). Question: Do you think that some books should be banned from schools or do you agree with the article that "Teenagers can be the harshest critics... let teenagers develop their critical thinking skills on their own."? Give specific examples in your answer.
A reminder that for homework tonight students must complete a good copy of a proper paragragh. A rough copy sheet has been provided. Students should come up with their own topic sentence based on the video prompt watched in class. If you would like to watch the video again it is linked in this post. Paragraphs are due at the start of class tomorrow (Thursday Feb. 4th). Welcome parents and students to Grade 9 Academic English here at Bear Creek. Our first unit of study this semester will be Harper Lee's classic novel To Kill a Mockingbird.
As the unit progresses students will be using this online space to respond to writing prompts including videos, news articles, think-about questions, short stories, advertisements, and a variety of other texts. Assignment sheets and homework information will be available under the "Assignments" tab (located across the top of this website). Information for parents about upcoming due dates and events will be available under the "Parents' Corner" tab (also located across the top of this website). If you have any questions about your child's progress please feel free to contact me at the school by phone or by email. My contact information is listed on your child's course outline and in the sidebar of this website. |
