Third Film in June:
Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain
a.k.a
Amélie
Directed by:
Jean-Pierre Jeunet
Screenplay by:
Guillaume Laurant
Jean-Pierre Jeunet
Made in: 2001
This is a foreign film (it's in French with English subtitles) and is a very vividly coloured, quirky love story. This film was a breakthrough in North America, winning all kinds of awards and it also did very well at the box office despite the language barrier (just like Life is Beautiful).

Second Film in June:
The second film on our list is
Brazil
Directed by Terry Gilliam (of Monty Python fame)
Screenplay by Terry Gilliam and Tom Stoppard (hmmm this guy sounds familiar!)
Made in: 1985
It is a dystopian film set in an imagined future (for all you Handmaid's Tale people out there), and it is very similar to the novel 1984 by George Orwell (one of my favourite books of all time). This one is theory-tastic!
Also it's in colour, even though the imdb.com page makes it look like a black and white film. It's just not very colour-ful, is all.

Movies You Should See Before You Die:
There are many, many lists online listing the best movies of different years, decades, and yes, of all time even.
Here's a link to one such list that provides 199 options. Some are obscure, while others might be familiar. If you take a film course in university I guarantee you will encounter some of these. Enjoy!

ISU Assignment - Comparing a 21st Century Novel
to a Shakespearean Play
_Your ISU assignment was handed out on MARCH 24TH.
You MUST pick one of the six books from the list AND...You MUST pick one of the six plays from the list.
Then you will complete two assignments related to the thematic similarities between your chosen texts: a close reading of your play and a comparative essay.
Remember to have fun with this and use all the resources available to you: the library, the internet, video store, friends, parents, teachers, etc.
For clarification see the list of options and assignment sheet listed below or see me in class.
Remember that for your essay you need at least TWO secondary sources (that is, scholarly articles, not some random hogwash from the internet... who writes that stuff anyway?) Also, obviously you need to cite both your novel and play.
If you need help with the structure of the essay check out this link from UofT: http://www.writing.utoronto.ca/advice/specific-types-of-writing/comparative-essay
Remember, I am looking for a solid ARGUMENT in your thesis statement. Look back at your "Identifying Arguments" handout for help with this if you find you are struggling. Or... you could just watch this Monty Python video (again):

Barrie Film Festival
Anybody can go see a movie.
Why not go see a film?
What's the difference? Well, it's kind of like literature and books. They are the same thing. Only different.
The Barrie Film Festival is runs shows on the first Wednesday of every month.
We'll be doing our own in-class film unit in June, so this would give you some great practice at "reading" a film. Dig deep. There's meaning in there somewhere.
See the trailer below for Joss Whedon's Much Ado About Nothing... (this one was playing during last Fall's longer Film Festival, and I mentioned it in class but I don't think that my rambling explanation did it any justice, so here is the trailer).

You Are Living in a Paradox
As you start thinking about which universities or colleges to apply to, it's never a bad idea to have a good ol' fashioned education debate:
The following videos will probably depress you more than anything else, however I think they contain fascinating insights into what the future of education could look like. Since you are all on the cusp of the next phase of your education, whatever that phase may be, I hope you will find the videos informative and infuriating.
*Note: Of course this doesn't excuse you from having to learn to write a well structured, well formatted, well thought out essay, and if you ask me in class I will tell you why.
